How Ghana’s Finest, Mawuli Gavor, Built A Successful Acting Career in Nigeria
Ghanaian born Mawuli Gavor appeared in Nollywood first as a presenter and tv show host; by the time he hit the Nollywood movie scene, his career skyrocketed and made him one of the most sought after names in the industry.
No one can deny Nollywood’s power and reach as one of the biggest and most successful movie industries in Africa and globally. This singular fact plays a huge role in the acting careers of many indigenous and international actors.
We can easily ascribe Mawuli Gavor’s success to his striking looks and handsome features but most importantly to his presence in the Nigerian entertainment industry, where most of his fans are based. The actor has starred in several Nollywood productions that continue to solidify his position in the industry.
He also has anchored many TV shows. Surprisingly, Mawuli has spent the majority of his career as an anchor for various tv shows, including Gh one and Studio 53 Extra, which was the show that led him into the Nigerian entertainment scene in the first place.
Mawuli Gavor was born in Accra, Ghana and was raised in Ghana and the US, where he spent his teenage to young adult years. He pursued a degree in business management and finance from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
After his studies, he returned to Ghana, starting his career as an accountant in a large firm. The job of computing numbers wasn’t where Mawuli’s real passion lay but being born into a finance inclined family, his career path was predetermined. Mawuli followed family tradition by studying the course and practising the trade while working as a model on the side. He even took acting classes to polish his acting skills.
When the opportunity to be on-screen finally presented itself, Mawuli was more than prepared for it. He started as a tv show host on local media in 2015 and then went on to host M-Net’s popular Studio 53 Extra. From there on, he carved a path into Nollywood. He has starred in tv series like ‘Hush’ where he played the role of RMD’s son Tes, in ‘Battleground’ and in several movies like ‘Chief Daddy’, ‘Sugar Rush’, ‘Rumour Has It’ amongst others.
Since he stepped into the movie scene, Mawuli has established himself as a notable actor and has become highly sought after. Thanks to his dashing good looks and a deep baritone voice, he was very popular with the ladies and a shoo-in for almost any role in need of a sexy gentleman/player. A part he seems to play too well.
One could argue that Nigeria’s Nollywood helped the actor push his career and set him apart from his peers in his home country’s movie industry.
Still, the Nigerian and Ghanaian movie industries continue to churn out crossover stars like Mawuli Gavor, Juliet Ibrahim and Majid Michel, to mention a few. Comedian Basketmouth’s new Showmax original series is a testament to this fact.
Basketmouth’s new show brought about the union of two separate movie industries to make the comedic treat that is ‘Ghana Jollof’. Who better to show the marriage of these two countries than Ghana’s very own Mawuli Gavor, who stars in the series.
The ambitious show was shot in both Accra and Lagos. It follows the story of two brothers who go on a quest to seek a better life in Ghana. The show promised to deliver a bit of both worlds, and it has been doing just that since its release. It stars Mawuli Gavor and other Ghanaian stars such as Joselyn Dumas, James Gardiner, and Jacinta Ocansey. The show also stars Stanley Chibuna (Funnybone), Akah Nnani, Buchi, and Basketmouth himself, so you know it’s a must-watch.
Mawuli makes his country and movie industries proud as he brings the Ghana touch to the Showmax series. Ghana Jollof presented the opportunity to see the star doing what he does best in his own country for many of his fans. At the same time, he delivers the Ghanaian touch that the show needed, reaching Showmax’s audiences across Africa and the UK.
Mawuli has succeeded as a tv personality and actor and as a serial entrepreneur and fitness enthusiast. He co-owns the fitness brand Cegar alongside ex BBNaija housemate Ceecee. The successful running of the fitness brand and everything else the actor has established in Nigeria shows that he is just where he needs to be.
